Rules Vary from Country to Country
- Official Zones: In Portugal, Belgium, or the Netherlands, naturism is permitted on designated beaches marked by signs. Elsewhere, nudity may be penalized.
- Wide Tolerance: In Spain, there is no national law prohibiting nudity on the beach, but some municipalities regulate it through local ordinances. Check locally for details.
- Everywhere: No one is photographed without consent, sit on a towel, and sexual behaviors are prohibited on public beaches. Naturism is not libertinism.
Portugal: Nine Official Beaches
Portugal has nine official naturist beaches, almost all located along the southern coast near Lisbon, Alentejo, and the Algarve:
- Praia do Meco (Moinho de Baixo), in Sesimbra, the most famous.
- Praia da Bela Vista and Praia da Adiça, on the Costa da Caparica, in Almada, about half an hour from Lisbon.
- Praia do Salto, near Porto Covo, Praia do Malhão, near Vila Nova de Milfontes, and Praia dos Alteirinhos, south of Zambujeira do Mar, on the wild Alentejo coast.
- Praia das Adegas, in Odeceixe, at the edge of the Algarve.
- Praia do Homem Nu, on Tavira Island, and Praia da Barreta, on Ilha Deserta, off the coast of Faro.
Spain: Nudity Tolerated Almost Everywhere
Spain is one of the most open countries in Europe. Here are a few iconic beaches:
- Es Trenc, in Mallorca: a long stretch of white sand with turquoise waters.
- Es Cavallet, in Ibiza, within the Ses Salines Natural Park.
- Vera Playa, in Andalusia (Almería), featuring an entire neighborhood designed for naturists.
Belgium: One Beach in Bredene
Belgium has only one official naturist beach on its coast: Bredene, near Ostend, which has been open since 2001. The naturist area is marked: nudity is prohibited outside this zone.
Netherlands: A Long Tradition
The Netherlands opened its first legal naturist beach at Callantsoog in the 1970s. Today, you can find them all along the coast, notably at Zandvoort, near Amsterdam, Hoek van Holland, and on the Maasvlakte, near Rotterdam, or at Domburg, in Zeeland.
And Elsewhere in Europe?
- Germany: The FKK (Freikörperkultur) culture is longstanding, with many naturist beaches along the Baltic Sea.
- Croatia: A pioneering country for naturism, featuring numerous campsites and naturist coves along the Adriatic coast.
- Greece and Italy: Beaches that are more tolerated than officially recognized, often secluded. Check locally before disrobing.
We are adding naturist beaches from each country as we expand across Europe: Portugal, Belgium, and the Netherlands are first on the list.
